3. Product Description
Recommended Uses: Wilsonart Solid Phenolic Core (SPC) Panels are produced
in various thicknesses adequate to preclude the use of a substrate. They are useful
where flat, freestanding panels are needed for decorative and/or functional purposes.
- Panel Board Products 568, 569, 575, and 590 are panels of various thicknesses with
decorative surfaces on both sides. These products are suitable for flat applications
such as toilet and dressing room partitions, instrumentation panels, workbenches,
shelving and tabletops.
- Product 121 features a decorative surface on one side, with the other side sanded
for casework and furniture surfacing applications.
- Wilsonart Impact-Resistant Laminate, Product 117, is ideal for applications where
the decorative surface must also contribute to the structural strength of the fabricated
product. As Impact-Resistant laminate can be fabricated over a frame instead of
a substrate, and requires no cross-banding, it is often used as a component of tabletops
and interior doors.
- Vehicle Interior Panel Product 514 is a flat, thick panel with the back specially
sanded for adhesives commonly used in the production of mass transit vehicles. Product
514 typically would be bonded to a structural member of a subway car interior.
- Product 128 is a cabinet component panel with a sanded back. It is often used as
part of a lazy susan storage unit.
- Identification Panel Product 550 is engraving stock for indoor signs and nameplates.
It consists of a conventional phenolic core inner layer, a white decorative laminate
subcore, and one or both decoratively clad faces. Black (1595-60) is most frequently
used for decorative faces, although any colour or pattern may be specified.
Product Composition: Wilsonart Solid Phenolic Core Panels are composed
of melamine-impregnated decorative surface papers superimposed over a varying number
of kraft phenolic core sheets to achieve a desired thickness. Decorative surface
papers may be used on both sides of the panel, or one side may be sanded for bonding
to a suitable frame.
Basic Limitations: While Wilsonart SPC Panels exhibit high resistance
to impact and stress cracking (because of their thickness,) they are intended solely
for interior use and should be protected from continuous direct sunlight, standing
water, highly reactive chemicals (acids and bases in particular) and from temperatures
higher than 275° F (135° C) for sustained periods of time.
Instruments may be mounted on Wilsonart SPC Panels. However, no electrical properties
are claimed by the manufacturer, and SPC Panels cannot be considered to be industrial
grade laminates.
Patterns & Colours:
Available in the full range of Wilsonart solid colours, stones, marbles, woodgrains,
leathers and patterns. Please see actual sample before specifying.
Finishes:
- #60 Matte
A textured finish with a moderate reflective quality. Glossometer reading: MD 10
' 2, CD 10 ' 2.
NOTE: Glossometer readings are made at a 60° angle of incidence. MD means the
machine direction of a laminate sheet, and CD refers to the cross direction.

The durability and impact resistance of Wilsonart SPC Panels exceed that of comparably
thick panels composed of HPDL + medium density fiberboard + HPDL. Dimensional stability
is slightly less predictable, because of the time required for humidity changes
to affect the multiple plies of the panel.

Codes and Certifications:
General Standards
Wilsonart SPC Panels are not specifically covered by industry-wide standards, except
for Wilsonart Impact-Resistant Laminate (Type 117). This product, (designated as
Type HSH by NEMA), conforms to the relevant standards of the American National Standards
Institute/National Electrical Manufacturers Association (ANSI/NEMA), LD3-1995, for
thickness, performance properties and appearance.
Specific Product Standards
Wilsonart International maintains internal standards that require all Wilsonart
SPC Panels to conform to the standards described for Type HSH.
5. Installation: Fabrication and Assembly Recommendations
Conditioning and Handling: Wilsonart SPC Panels, due to material composition,
may warp when exposed to extremely dry or humid conditions for extended periods.
Degree of warpage depends on the thickness of the product. Panels sanded on one
side (especially if thickness is less than 1/4 inch, or 6.34mm), may tend to warp
more easily than double-faced panels of the same thickness. Consult the Thickness/Warpage
Table for more information.
To combat warpage, store SPC Panels horizontally and protect them from extremes
in temperature and humidity. Recommended conditioning temperature is 75 degrees
F (24 degrees C). Panels should be conditioned at about 45% relative humidity. SPC
Panels are heavy for their size. This makes them exceptionally sturdy, but their
weight is a factor to consider when planning labor and transportation costs.
Materials: Because of their thickness, Wilsonart SPC Panels require
no bonded substrate. For certain uses, thinner versions (1/8 inch, or 3.18mm) may
be bonded using contact adhesive, or other adhesives designed for woodworking. Wilsonart
Contact and PVA Adhesives are recommended for the majority of bonding conditions,
and are available from the same sources as SPC Panels. Use contact adhesives on
sanded surfaces only. Use epoxy adhesives on unsanded surfaces. When necessary,
you can prepare small areas for contact adhesive bonding with 100-grit sandpaper.
Tools: Wilsonart SPC Panels may be sawed, routed, drilled and tapped.
Use high quality, carbide-tipped cutting edges. Keep your tools sharp to prevent
chipping.
Methods: In general, Wilsonart SPC Panels are installed in a manner
similar to methods used for standard decorative laminates. Secure surface-mounted
objects into the face or back of the panel with self-tapping screws in predrilled
holes. Do not screw into the edges of SPC Panels.
Use shims on the undersides of panels if leveling at joints is necessary. Do not
use splines in the edges. Use metal brackets or retaining clips to secure panels
to each other or to abutting surfaces. Do not miter the edges, since they are vulnerable
to damage.
Thinner panels should be applied to frames having unsupported spans no larger than
24 x 24 inches (609.6mm x 609.6mm).
Be sure to make allowance for expansion and contraction of SPC Panels as changes
in humidity and temperature occur.
Although stress cracking is very unlikely, cutouts and holes for instrumentation,
bolts and so forth must be oversized. Panels less than 3/8 inches, or 95.4mm, thick
should have rounded, smooth inside corners.
The minimum distance from any edge to a screw hole center should be 1-1/2 times
the diameter of the screw to be used.
Assembled pieces should meet the "Architectural Woodwork Quality Standards, Guide
Specifications and Quality Certification Program" guidelines of the Architectural
Woodwork Institute where applicable.

may not apply to you. It is to your benefit to save your documentation upon purchase
of a product.
7. Maintenance
The decorative surface may be cleaned with warm water and mild soaps, such as those
used for hands or dishes. Do not use cleansers that contain abrasives, acids or
alkalis; they will damage the decorative surface. Remove stubborn stains with a
2-minute exposure to hypochlorite bleach such as Clorox®, followed by a clean
water rinse.
We recommend that you not allow any of the following reagents to remain in contact
with the decorative surface:
- Hypochlorite bleach, except as described above
- Hydrogen peroxide solution
- Mineral acids, hydrochloric acid such as Lime-A-WayT, sulfuric or nitric acid
- Caustic solutions containing greater than 2% lye, such as Drano®
- Sodium bisulfate, such as Sani-Flush®
- Potassium permanganate
- Berry juices
- Silver nitrate, in 1% concentration or greater
- Gentian violet
- Mild silver protein, such as 20% argyrol
- Bluing
- Fabric dye, such as Tintex® or Rit®
- Alcohol containing 1% iodine in solution
